Short Biography

Wilfried Elmenreich is professor for Smart Grids at the Department of Networked and Embedded Systems at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, Austria. His research interests include intelligent energy systems, self-organizing systems and technical applications of swarm intelligence. He is also affiliated with the Lakeside Labs cluster in Klagenfurt, a research and innovation cluster on self-organizing networked systems. He studied computer science at the Vienna University of Technology, where he received his doctoral degree in 2002 with distinction. He was granted venia docendi in the field computer engineering from Vienna University of Technology in 2008. He held visiting research positions at Vanderbilt University (2005), the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (2007), and the University of Passau (2012-2013). In 2007 he moved to Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt as a senior researcher. Since 2013, he has been Professor for Smart Grids at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt.

He is co-author of "Modeling of Photovoltaic Systems Using MATLAB" (Wiley 2016) and "Engineering Swarms of Cyber-Physical Systems" (CRC Press 2025), editor of several other books, and has published over 250 papers in the field of networked and embedded systems. His current research includes large-scale sustainable charging infrastructure projects, applications of swarm intelligence to industrial scheduling, and the integration of artificial intelligence with climate-neutral systems. He serves as coordinator of the interdisciplinary research cluster on Energy Management and Technology at AAU, and is spokesperson for the Doctoral Program in Information & Communications Engineering. His teaching spans smart grids, sustainable development, and interdisciplinary areas including game studies and engineering. Elmenreich is senate member of Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, Senior Member of IEEE and counselor of Klagenfurt's IEEE student branch. His Erdős Number is 3.
